John Singer Sargent - part 20

John Singer Sargent working in 1913
Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution

John Singer Sargent (1866 - 1925) was an American artist, considered the "leading portrait painter of his generation" for his evocation of Edwardian era luxury. During his career he created approximately 900 oil paintings and more than 2000 watercolours, as well as countless sketches and charcoal drawings. His oeuvre documents worldwide travel, from Venice to the Tyrol, Corfu, the Middle East, Montana, Maine and Florida, amongst others.

For full biographical notes see part 1. For earlier works see parts 1 - 19 also.

This is part 20 of a 23-part post on the works of John Singer Sargent:

“Mugs":
Sargent made hundreds of rapidly drawn charcoal sketches of society personalities, drawings he referred to as "mugs". He made these in response to a high demand for his work, and not being able to satisfy all with oil paintings, satiated his sitters with quick charcoal drawings. These drawings are mostly of wealthy patrons, although sometimes he would make exceptions:
