John Singer Sargent (1866 - 1925) was an American artist, considered the "leading portrait painter of his generation" for his evocation of Edwardian era luxury. During his career he created approximately 900 oil paintings and more than 2000 watercolours, as well as countless sketches and charcoal drawings. His oeuvre documents worldwide travel, from Venice to the Tyrol, Corfu, the Middle East, Montana, Maine and Florida, amongst others.

I don't like Sargent. Everything appears to be 'tossed off', bravura arrogance is a bore. Too much dash. No wabi sabi. Japanese have this thing where too much evident professionalism is considered suspect in a work. The celebrate the amateur for the love they bring to the subject.
ReplyDeleteJust thought I'd letcha know....:)
Really? Skill and talent are over rated? I'd sooner have a Sargent on my wall than a Tracey Emmin or Damin Hurst. Being an amateur artist shouldn't be celebrated. There is too much tosh in this world already. I celebrate the skilled and the talented, otherwise everyone's an artist therefore no one is.
DeleteAmen.
