A series on advertising posters for two “vices,” alcohol and tobacco. Advertising is now strictly regulated in the USA and UK for both products.
UK: There is no singular body to regulate the marketing of alcohol in the UK. Devolved governments have the ability to set requirements for alcohol labelling and non-broadcast advertising. Broadcast advertising is the responsibility of the UK Government. Advertising is overseen by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA), and sponsorship of TV shows by Ofcom.
USA: Alcohol Advertising Laws. The First Amendment allows for a lot of freedom of speech in general and therefore limits how much the federal government can regulate advertising, even in regard to alcohol. In general, in general advertisements of alcoholic products must be truthful and without deception.
