Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528) was a German painter, engraver, printmaker, mathematician and theorist. Dürer revolutionised printmaking, elevating it to an independent art form. His high quality woodcuts established his reputation and influence across Europe when he was still in his twenties, and he is regarded as the greatest artist of the Northern Renaissance. His vast body of works include altarpieces and other religious works, numerous portraits and self-portraits, and copper engravings.

1507-09 Heller Altar:
The Heller Altar is an oil on panel triptych by Albrecht Dürer and Matthias Grünewald. Dürer painted the central panel, and Grünewald the outer panels. It was commissioned by Frankfurt merchant Jakob Heller for the Dominican church of the city. In 1615 the central panel was sold to Maximilian I of Bavaria and a copy was ordered to replace the original in its location at the church's high altar. The central panel was destroyed by a fire in Munich in 1729.
The famous drawing of two praying hands by Dürer is a study for one of the apostles in the central panel.
