Italian Posters - part 2

A comprehensive look at Italian poster design, from vintage to modern posters (1895 - 1971) designed by numerous designers and artists. I have included individual biographies of the artists, where found.

This is part 2 of an 11 part series on Italian Poster Design:

Franz Laskoff (1869-1918) was born in Poland and had worked briefly in Paris before moving to Milan. His style was strongly influenced by England’s Beggarstaff Brothers works, who perhaps more than others reduced Art Nouveau to graphic essentials. Unlike most of his contemporaries, Laskoff understood the power of eliminating excess details from his work. Although he only stayed in Italy until 1904 his avant-garde style had a major impact on younger artists working there.

Leopoldo Metlicovitz (1868 Trieste - 1944 Ponte Lambro) was an Italian painter, illustrator and poster designer, together with his contemporaries, is considered one of the fathers of modern Italian poster art. Many of the works of the most famous composers of the time are advertised on posters designed by Metlicovitz. In 1906, on the occasion of the great Universal Exhibition in Milam, Metlicovitz won the competition for the poster that symbolised the fair, dedicated to the Simplon Tunnel, and making a name for himself as a poster designer.
