World War 1 posters - part 10

During World War 1 the impact of the poster as a means of communication was greater than at any other time during history. The ability of poster to inspire, inform, and persuade combined with vibrant design trends in many of the participating countries to produce thousands of interesting visual works. As a valuable historical research resource, the posters provide multiple points of view for understanding this global conflict. As artistic works, the posters range in style form graphically vibrant works by well-known designers to anonymous ones.

Christopher Richard Wynne Nevinson (1889-1946) was an English figure and landscape painter, etcher and lithographer, who was one of the most famous war artists of World War I. He is often referred to by his initials C. R. W. Nevinson, and was also known as Richard.

Joseph Pennell (l857-1926) was an American draftsman, etcher, lithographer, and illustrator for books and magazines. A prolific artist, he spent most of his working life in Europe, and developed an interest in landmarks, landscapes, and industrial scenes around the world. A student of James Lambdin and Thomas Eakins, he was later influenced by James McNeill Whistler.

Gerrit Albertus Beneker began his art career in 1905 as an illustrator. His early passion was to create an art that would inspire and provide honor to the workingman. He completed over 150 magazine covers, numerous ads including many for Ivory Soap and over 50 illustrations for magazine stories. His early work reflects his connection to the hope and industrial energy of early 20th century America. He was a founding member of the Provincetown Art Association and was very active in the development of the art colony.

In 1918 Beneker was called to Washington DC to paint posters for the US Navy with the goal of fostering support for the war effort among workingmen. His most famous poster, "Sure We'll Finish the Job", sold over 3 million copies.

Charles Eric Gustrine (December 24, 1870 - February 1966) was a Swedish-American artist and publisher. Born in Norrkoping, Sweden, Gustrine immigrated to the United States in 1888 from Kristiania (Oslo), Norway. He settled in Chicago and became a naturalised U.S. citizen on May 11, 1896.

Daniel Putnam Brinley (1879-1963) was an American muralist and painter. He was born in Newport, Rhode Island. He spent his childhood at his parents' home in Cos Cob, Connecticut, where he was known affectionately as "Put". He studied at the Art Students League of New York from 1900 to 1902. During the 1930s Brinley earned considerable fame and profit from his murals.

Queen Mary's Army Auxiliary Corps (QMAAC) was the name given in April 1918 to the Women's Auxiliary Army Corps (WAAC). That force had been formed in 1917 to free up valuable and experienced soldiers from the rear areas for front line service. As well as cooking and waiting on officers, WAAC personnel served as clerks, telephone operators, store-women, drivers, printers, bakers and cemetery gardeners.

Alfred Offner (1879-1947) was an Austrian painter, graphic, and poster artist. He received his first art lessons in Chernivtsi from the painter Hugo Zonka. He then studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and from 1902 at the Royal Academy of Arts in Munich. He was a member of the Society of Friends of Art in Chernivtsi. From 1905 to 1912 he took part in the Chernivtsi art exhibitions. He also created frescos in the German House in Chernivtsi. From 1912 he was director of the Chernivtsi Art School. From 1907 to 1923 he was a member of the Vienna Secession. After the outbreak of the First World War he left Chernivtsi and moved to Vienna and Berlin. He later lived in Pilsen , Tábor and Cracow. During the Second World War Offner had to seek refuge from persecution because of his Jewish descent and found it in the castle of the Coudenhove-Kalergi family in Poběžovice (German Ronsperg) in western Bohemia. Unrecognized, he continued to paint. After the war he stayed in Poběžovice, where he died of tuberculosis.

Sidney Robert Chilvers (1884-1961 UK) Sidney Robert Chilvers (1884-1961) was born in Snettisham, Norfolk, UK. Sidney was "volunteered" into The Great War in 1915 and became a Gunner in the Royal Garrison Artillery. After the war he continued his career as an artist.
