Charles Loupot is remembered as one of France’s most influential poster artists of the early twentieth century. Charles Henri Honoré Loupot was born in Nice, France in 1892. In 1911, he took painting lessons and experimented with lithography at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Lyon. Loupot was chosen as one of the four official poster artists to represent the 1925 International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts. Loupot is one of the major creators in the history of the European poster. He is known for his posters for the furniture of the Galerie Barbès, the Voisin cars, Peugeot, Twinning tea, Valentine paintings, Ambre Solaire and above all St. Raphaël and the Canton Furs.

1937 St. Raphaël Quinquina: This is the very first poster that Loupot created for the St. Raphaël brand of bitters that featured the two waiters who would become, in a series of redesigns and refinements, the company’s trademark. While future advertisements would evolve in style and situation, what remained was their stark contrast of size and shape, and well as their signature red and white colors. “This premiere realisation for St. Raphaël only represents the beginning of a long road to conceptual purity attained somewhere around 1950.

1942 Biscuit Gondolo: During WW2, France’s Vichy regime banned all liquor advertising, which throttled Loupot's income; so he repaired to his home in Chevroches and practiced painting. This signed oil painting is whimsical on its face; but a Gondolo Biscuit is no mere cookie. Founded in 1843, the Gondolo brand was a household name in France, a beloved morsel of childhood, tradition and memory comparable to Proust's madeleine.
