John Singer Sargent (1866 - 1925) was an American artist, considered the "leading portrait painter of his generation" for his evocation of Edwardian era luxury. During his career he created approximately 900 oil paintings and more than 2000 watercolours, as well as countless sketches and charcoal drawings. His oeuvre documents worldwide travel, from Venice to the Tyrol, Corfu, the Middle East, Montana, Maine and Florida, amongst others.

For full biographical notes see part 1. For earlier works see parts 1 - 6 also.

  1. I think Ellen Terry as Lady Macbeth might be my favorite Sargent. Stunning I just saw it 10 days ago at the Met... a great Sargent show going on there now ( July to Oct 2015 )

As it is pointed out, such a scene is not in the play, yet it sums up Lady M's part superbly Macbeth is like, Lord of the Rings; once the crown/ ring is grasped, the plunge down to ruin begins in earnest and is unstoppable . If one looks, she is not exalting, her face is utterly terrified.
